🧶 Pattern Overview
This pattern creates a full sphere, just like an amigurumi ball, except you stop decreasing once it fits snug around the ornament’s hanger.
⭐ BOTTOM OF THE SPHERE (fully closed circle)
Round 1:
Magic ring, 6 sc. (6)
Round 2:
Inc in each st around. (12)
Round 3:
1 sc, inc around. (18)
Round 4:
2 sc, inc around. (24)
Round 5:
3 sc, inc around. (30)
Round 6:
4 sc, inc around. (36)
👉 At this point, you should have a flat circle.
This will form the bottom of the ornament cover.
If your ornament is slightly larger, add another increase:
Round 7 (optional):
5 sc, inc around. (42)
⭐ BODY (no increases)
These rounds create the curved “belly” of the sphere:
Rounds 7–14:
Sc around. (same stitch count each round)
Adjust number of rounds depending on ornament height.
You want the height to reach just below the ornament’s widest point.
⭐ START DECREASING — INSERT ORNAMENT BEFORE HOLE GETS TOO SMALL
Round 15:
4 sc, dec around. (30)
Round 16:
3 sc, dec around. (24)
Round 17:
2 sc, dec around. (18)
👉 PAUSE HERE.
Slip the ornament into the sphere.
The opening should still be large enough.
If not large enough, undo one decrease round.
Once ornament is inside, continue:
⭐ SHAPE AROUND THE ORNAMENT CAP / HANGER
You want the decreases to snug right under the ornament’s metal cap.
Round 18:
1 sc, dec around. (12)
Check fit.
If the opening is still too loose:
Round 19:
Dec around. (6)
At 6 stitches, you have a tiny hole that naturally grabs the ornament’s hanger.
⭐FINISH
Fasten off.
Weave tail firmly around the last round (like a tiny drawstring) to secure the top neatly around the hanger.
Hide the tail inside the cover.
I hope you like this super easy Christmas ornament crochet pattern! For the ornament pictured I followed this pattern and then sewed on multi-colored jingle bells. For a striped pattern, like a candy cane red and white look, just alternate colors every other round. It really is just that easy!
